New directions for Social Housing
Over 60 people gathered to participate in a discussion with Housing NZ’s Regional Manager Darren Toy, General Manager Accessible Properties Vicki McLaren and General Manager Tauranga Community Housing Trust Jacqui Ferrel. Each provided an overview of their position. View the presentation slides here: New Directions for Social Housing

Challenges for social housing providers included:
  • Barriers to sustainable tenancies for tenants unwilling to engage with providers and services
  • Methamphetamine use and antisocial behaviours
  • Access and coordination of support services to meet tenant need
  • Lack of a tenant centric social service model
  • Desire of social housing providers to work with social service providers to co-design and pilot local solutions
  • Agreement to hold a workshop to begin devising local solutions

The suggested topic for a workshop is how to support older people no longer able to live independently in social housing so to enable them to continue living in their home or transition to appropriate care.
