What is Sustainable Backyards?

Sustainable Backyards (SBY) is a month long calendar of events in March hosted throughout the Bay. We had over 140 free or low cost EnviroEvents this year supporting sustainable living, conservation and other awesome initiatives that are taking place regionally. SBY aims to improve the wellbeing and quality of life of people in the community via informative workshops and activities. These range anywhere from growing your own food, beach/estuary clean ups, consumer choices, cooking, solar home seminars, bush walks, exhibitions, farmers/ night markets, kids events and movie screenings. SBY provides a mechanism for communities and organisations in the Bay of Plenty to have a voice in the protection of their environment and people.

SBY Aims to benefit the community in the following ways:

1. Connect people – via low cost or free events with a broad demographic appeal, including Maori, youth and the elderly.
2. Inspire people – Improving the wellbeing and quality of life of people in the community via informative workshops and activities.
3. Engage and train people– helping people be proactive in new learning and lifestyles.
4. A green voice – Provide a mechanism for communities and organisations in the Bay of Plenty to have a voice in the protection of their environment and people via the promotion of local initiatives.

The outcomes are well connected, better informed, resourced and skilled individuals coming together to form resilient communities.
Never hosted a Sustainable Backyards event before?

Sustainable Backyards (SBY) is a great opportunity for your group/ organisation/ business to promote the messages about the environment you are trying to address.  SBY 2018 had an attendance of over 10,000 people and reaches the whole Bay of Plenty region.   It is a great platform for you to work from and with.

We are all about collaboration, that is what SBY is built on.   So join that strength to be a part of saving the environment in 2019!
