Minister Shane Jones visits key project sites in Rotorua
Regional Economic Development Minister, Hon Shane Jones, spent the morning in Rotorua catching up on the progress being made on the Lakefront and Whakarewarewa Forest projects.

Both projects received funding from Central Government’s Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) last year as they are expected to significantly impact Rotorua’s development opportunities and boost the district’s economy.

The Minister visited the new forest hub currently being developed off Tarawera Road, Long Mile Road, and the Rotorua Lakefront. He also stopped in at Scion to announce that the One Billion Trees Programme is providing a funding boost of $422,500 for research – led by Scion in partnership with other Bay of Plenty organisations – to identify more effective native seedling propagation techniques and technology.

Rotorua Mayor, Steve Chadwick, said it was a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate to the Minister the positive impact the PGF funding is having on our city.

“We were delighted to host Minister Jones today, alongside our partners, and share with him the progress being made on these key projects.

“Rotorua is going through a period of significant growth and investment and it means a lot to have Central Government’s support and a shared vision for our future.”

Council is managing an investment of $14.5 million to complete the Forest project. The project will enhance the forest amenity and improve the experience for all users. Council allocated $7.5 million to the project in its 2018 – 2028 Long-term Plan with $7 million being contributed from the PGF.

Council allocated $20 million to the Lakefront project with matched funding from the PGF enabling the project to be completed over the next three years. The project was recognised by the Government for its ability to create over 470 jobs.
